Richmond is a town with a host of architectural treasures to photograph dating from the Victorian era and its somewhat haphazard street layout is testament to its location along the banks of the river. There is a large variety of old Karoo cottages to be seen, particularly in the historical precinct around the Dutch Reformed Church and the market square. To use it as a base to explore landscape photo opportunities is an excellent choice.
Sutherland is an excellent base to explore the wild and rugged countryside of the Roggeveld plateau and the many mountain passes that link the town to the surrounding lowland areas. Probably the most well-known of the mountain passes is situated on the R354 south towards Matjiesfontein, that cuts through a mighty cleft in the Roggeveld Mountains five kilometres from Sutherland.
The Swartberg is amongst the best exposed fold mountain chains in the world, and the pass slices through magnificently scenic geological formations. To the north of the range lies the other large semi-arid area in South Africa, the Great Karoo. Much of the Swartberg is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most jaw dropping beauty from the road to explore is the R328 run through the Swartberg mountain range (black mountain in English) which runs roughly east-west along the northern edge of the semi-arid area called the Little Karoo in the Western Cape province of South Africa
