Kgalagadi transfrontier park

Kgalagadi transfrontier park

Northern Cape. Approximately 250 km North of Upington – close to the Botswana border you enter at Twee Rivieren gate

Access

Very easy access on main national roads. A 4x 4 is not required in the park for most of the internal roads - but vehicle with high clearance is recommended. It is critical that you reduce your vehicle tyre pressure as recommended at the camps. This will greatly assist you not getting stuck in the sand.

 Accommodation

This is primarily a Sanparks reserve. A variety of accommodation is available – camping / chalets. There are also private lodges in the Botswana side

We have stayed at various camps – all self-catering – Twee Rivieren, Kalahari tented Camp, Mata Mata, Nossob, Grootkolk and Urikaruus. All of these provide comfortable clean accommodation. The wilderness camps rely on solar and gas so suggest this be taken into consideration for your camera batteries to be charged. We travel with an inverter in our car and also charge our camera batteries while we are driving. Kgalagadi lodge 5km from the Twee Rivieren gate is a fabulous option for accommodation – you need to go into the park daily as day visitors. The day visitor’s permits should be booked prior to arriving to avoid disappointment when their daily quota is met. If you are a wild card holder there is no charge for the days visitors permit

Booking

Sanparks website. Accommodation is very difficult to obtain – so booking 11 months before the time is advised. We go to the Sanparks office very early on the day the booking opens to ensure we have a good chance of getting the wilderness or more popular camps. Pensioner’s discounts are available at certain camps and only during certain periods (limited to January – or the hotter months only. Note you can only use the call Centre or office to obtain these – not the online reservations
